Robert Smith, Deputy Sheriff, Coconino County
How long have you been with Coconino County?
I joined Coconino County Sheriff's Office in 2010 after an exhaustive search for the ideal position. I retired from a 25 year career as a Executive Chef which included appointments with the Ritz Carlton and Sodexho. I volunteered for two years with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office as a tactical Flight Officer in both fixed wing and rotor craft operations. I joined the Coconino County Sheriff's Office as a detention officer. This was a great method to acclimate my self with our culture and our unique approach to serving the public. After approximately a year I tested for and was awarded a coveted patrol position. Since then I have been assigned to the Flagstaff district and currently am assigned to the Williams substation.
What motivates you in your job?
I am motivated by the next opportunity. Much of my shift is governed by the urgent, unforeseen demand. Often times we move swift, under trying conditions, with profound liability, only to find the most absurd situations. I respect the process where I arrive to find someone, who more times than not, has exercised isolated poor judgement and has chosen to make them selves eligible for legal action. In Coconino County theses people are viewed as a whole person and frequently they are offered treatment for addiction, leverage to participate in the legal system, and returned to society with an opportunity. I trust my peers and the administration at the Sheriff's Office with my safety and professional fate.
In what ways are you involved in the community other than being in Law Enforcement?
I volunteer as a 2nd Lieutenant with The Civil Air Patrol. We are a inclusive S.T.E.M. focused national origination that provides opportunities for students participate in a wide variety of aviation activities. I am a volunteer USA football player safety coach with a focus on concussion prevention / awareness. I sit on a variety of governing boards including the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System. I am a certified substitute teacher K-8. I earned a B.S. from NAU, and competed in over 120 bicycle races locally and nationally. Previously I created a corporation called Victory Gardens to aid people interested in growing their own food, free from man made chemicals. Now I spend my free time developing my Arborist skills.
