Bill retired in 2007 as vice president of sales of a Philippine manufacturing company. He spent most of his professional career in a single specialty chemical field in a variety of positions - marketing, sales, and management. He had lots of international experience and at one point was managing director of a joint venture company in Japan where he lived with his family. He grew up in eastern Colorado and graduated from the Colorado School of Mines as a professional metallurgical engineer. He lives in Pittsburgh, Pa which is where Ms. Lancaster grew up except for three childhood years in Japan. Get the connection?
During his 34 years in management positions he got very clear on what not to do as a manager. In retirement, he got keenly interested in deeply getting into leadership technology when he accepted a position on a leadership development team in his church. The members of the team were competent, displayed great team spirit and had been working together for two years- a bit intimidating. Aside from commitment, wisdom, depth and life experience he brought to the team unique appreciation for the pitfalls of poor leadership. He studied and listened to the offerings of many of the gurus in the leadership field, participated in the activities of his team, conducted trainings, and was able to quickly make contributions.
Nowadays he says he doesn’t know how he ever had time to work. He reads every day, writes, studies and plays bridge, exercises, does yoga, cooks, does social things with wife and friends (some new), travels (but less now since a stroke 18 months ago). keeps on top of world affairs, watches some TV, and plays with the dog. Oh, and also takes care of the mundane. No more international trips. skiing or distance hiking. He never imagined that doctor appointments and dealing with insurance companies would eat up so much time.
